clubMINI NZ at annual Concours d'elegance and NZ Classic Car Show

22:17

This coming weekend, February 8th and 9th, sees the annual Concours d'elegance and NZ Classic Car Show being held in the picturesque Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland.

It is a celebration of classic and marque cars - competitions based on presentation, appearance, originality and excellence. In the United States and Europe the attendance at such events is in the hundreds of thousands, the investment measured in millions.

Similar events are held at Goodwood UK, Pebble Beach USA and the famous Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este at Lake Como, Italy.

What is the Concours d'Elegance and NZ Classic Car Show?

A celebration of classic and marque cars
Competitions based on presentation, appearance, originality and excellence

The MG Car Club launched the first Intermarque Concours d'Elegance at the sunken gardens of Auckland's Cornwall Park on December 1, 1972. Then as now, the event was an inter-club affair and MG became the first winner of the Inter-Club Challenge Shield. Honours also went to Alvis, Studebaker, Jowett, Riley, and Citroen Car Clubs.

Until 1981 MG and Jaguar dominated the Cornwall Park event. Then Porsche took the Shield and moved the rapidly growing show to Ellerslie. Today over 65 car clubs, leading new vehicle dealerships, sponsors and the restoration industry support the event.

In recent years, the Mini Car Club of Auckland have won the "Best Club display" title, with their imaginative displays, and also their members' driving prowess in the Gymkhana event - known for revving engines, smoking and squealing tyres.  The Mini club regularly upstages the wealthier cousin BMW Car Club of NZ, showing that bigger and more expensive is not necessarily better.

Each year thousands of car enthusiasts and those who are simply curious spend the day browsing round the displays. There are now more honours - ranging from the coveted Intermarque Team Shield to Masters Class for individual vehicles and Best Display - the theme for which this year is "Back to the Future" - with an original DeLorian car featured.

Minis

This year clubMINI NZ combines with the Mini Cooper of NZ Register in a display of Cooper and Mini Cooper cars from the past to the future.

Amongst the clubMINI NZ display cars will be a 1961 Cooper Formula Junior 1 litre racing car, a 2010 MINI John Cooper Works WC50 special edition, and a 2008 MINI John Cooper Works Clubman, and a guest appearance of MINI DOWN UNDER book author Donn Anderson, who will be selling and autographing copies of his book for Mini fans..

Vehicles not only come from around New Zealand but also the world - in 2003 for example we welcomed 27 Alvis owners and their cars from the UK.

It takes almost a year to put a show like this together. The winning club each year hosts the subsequent event with the support of other leading clubs.

Continuity, procedure and judging is overseen by TACCOC, the Thoroughbred and Classic Car Club. The organising committee meets monthly.

Vehicles displayed will range from the early '20s through to the latest modern exotics, and will vary from Micro cars through to Utes and the most exotic cars in New Zealand.

The show opens to the public on Sunday 9th February at 10.00am. We hope to see you there!

Record numbers sign up for 2014 Silverstone Classic

11:00

A record number of eager car clubs have already signed up to be part of this summer’s award-winning Silverstone Classic (25-27 July).

No fewer than 84 clubs have already registered online thus taking advantage of a special two-for-one classic car display ticket offer as well as access for their members to coveted in-field display parking at the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival. This number far surpasses the 56 clubs that had registered by this time last year and already exceeds the total number of 77 that participated in 2013 – itself a record.

Among the newcomers are the Rover P6 Club, the Royal Air Force Mini Club and the Berkeley Enthusiasts Club, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary at the event. These will line up alongside the more familiar massive gatherings of Aston Martins, Bentleys, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, MGs, Morgans, MX5s, Porsches and a fabulous kaleidoscope of others including the annual BMW Zedfest.

Moreover the Silverstone Classic is now widely regarded as the perfect place for motor manufacturers and passionate owners to commemorate important milestones in motoring history, with record parades of E-type Jaguars, Ferrari F40s and Porsche 911s among recent highlights. A special on-track cavalcade to mark 50 years of the iconic Ford Mustang has already been announced for July.

“Last year we had more than 9000 classic cars on display at the Silverstone Classic and it seems certain that we will top that number this summer,” said Event Director, Nick Wigley. “We value highly the massive contribution the classic car clubs make to the overall success of the Silverstone Classic. They provide an amazing spectacle for both race fans and fellow devotees who really enjoy the camaraderie of spending time with thousands of like minded enthusiasts – that’s why we offer them special deals to be an integral part of the massive show.”

The special incentive for members of car clubs and organisations is open until the end of May. Registration online via the official www.silverstoneclassic.com website is totally free for 2014 and, once signed up, members of these clubs will be given a special code offering them two adult tickets – plus the wonderful chance to add their own classic car to the glittering in-field displays – from just £39.

General admission tickets for this summer’s edition of the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival are selling fast with fans taking advantage of considerable ‘early-bird’ savings. Full details can also be found on the new-look www.silverstoneclassic.com website.

Use the MiniForce - new club!

11:30

MiniForce is a recently formed club with the motto of: "The club where the classic and BMW Mini stand wing-to-wing in support of our Armed Forces".

Launched in January 2013 by Mark and Liz Elvin, they are getting ready for an active season of events both locally and nationally - not forgetting their Mini-adventure to Limburg miniclub in August.

Over the past year Mark and Liz Elvin's highly visible yellow and orange classic Minivan has been seen darting along the West Norfolk roads never failing to turn heads. During fundraising events at, and around, RAF Marham, they got talking to people who suggested starting a Mini club at the camp as there were a few classic Mini owners who didn't belong to any clubs but would like to get involved in the Mini scene. So they did just that and launched MiniForce.

With such a strong affiliation to the RAF base it was only natural the club would choose a charity to promote and donate to related to the armed forces. SSAFA Forces Help is a national charity with local branches who are there for those who currently serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families too.

The club welcomes new members who agree to adorn a rather trendy windscreen sunstrip which reads: MiniForce - 'Salute Our Troops'. Whether you drive a classic or BMW Mini, you're welcome. Infact, all classic cars and future Mini owners are also welcome - and it's free to join.

Starting their event season with a drive down to Brooklands Mini Day, they quickly follow it up with Wheels Day, Lincoln Big Day, Suffolk Run and H2H.

A new forum has recently been launched and this can be found at www.miniforce.boards.net with a website to follow very soon at: www.roads-uk.com
