RAF Mini Club wins at Silverstone Classic

The packed weekend of the Silverstone Classic provides spectacular classic motor racing on the world famous circuit, impressive track parades, infield displays from over 100 car clubs featuring more than 10,000 classic cars. With Silverstone Circuit being an old WW2 airfield, the classic event held every year is the perfect location for the Royal Air Force Mini Club (RAFMC) to have their annual meet and feel right at home!

A reoccurring event for the club, members spend 4 days on site displaying their vehicles and interacting with crowds. Previous years have seen the club putting on grand display of beautiful Minis of all shapes, colour and sizes and last year the club was awarded the prestigious Scarf and Goggles Award for best infield display.

This year though, saw the introduction of the first concours competition held at the event. The categories including, Best Car, Judges Choice and Spectators' Favourite and each club was allowed to submit one entry.

James Goodright is an Engineer based at DSAE Cosford and is the owner of a 1995 Cooper Si which he has owned since he 18. With a serial number 001, the Mini was originally owned by John Cooper and was used as the press release vehicle for the return of the Cooper S model.

The very rare Mini was shortlisted for the concours by a handful of expert judges including Wheeler Dealers' Mike Brewer and work began in James’s garage to bring it up to its highest standard before being displayed at the show. The judges were incredibly impressed by the restoration of the Mini especially due to James driving it daily. Mike Brewer even recalls driving it as a journalist on ITV’s Pulling Power when it was launched. After a thrilling parade lap along with other contestants on the Sunday, the final few gathered outside the iconic Ferris Wheel on the Village Green for the results.

James and his Cooper Si were awarded the Judges Choice Trophy and only lost out by half a point to the overall winner of the concours. The club is incredibly proud that one of its members has been so successful at this great event, all the hard work and late nights really paid off.
