RED Driving School switching to MINIs

Fleet News reports that Red Driving School is to change the majority of its fleet of cars to MINIs. After making a deal with BMW, the driving school will be adding around 350 of the MINI Cooper D 5-door Hatches to its network of 1200 drivers.

Coming initially in Midnight Black and White Silver, a selection of Blazing Red MINIs will be added later.

The MINIs will replace the current fleet which is made up of Vauxhall and Renault models.

The survey, which polled 2,000 UK adults, found that over 1 in 5 people are now considering purchasing a classic car as a new investment.

While a part of the X-raid team celebrated on the Silk Way Rally finish podium in China’s capital Beijing, today, another part battled it out for the podium positions in Spain’s Baja Aragon. At the end of three days and four special stages, Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) and Michel Périn (FRA) finished third behind Al-Attiyah and Carlos Sainz, with Orlando Terranova (ARG) / Tom Colsoul (BEL) coming fifth. The buggy pairing Jutta Kleinschmidt / Philipp Beier (both GER) secured 12th place. Meanwhile, Ricardo Porém und Paulo Fiuza withdrew after an accident on the second day.

Today, the 2016 Silk Way Rally ended with the second stage win for Yazeed Al-Rajhi (KSA) and his German navigator Timo Gottschalk. Tomorrow, the competitors will drive in a convoy to the winners’ podium in Beijing. 

Silk Way Rally Stage 13: Vasilyev clinches second place to retain third position overall

  • With just two Stages left to play out in this year’s gruelling Silk Way Rally, the MINI ALL4 Racing team are inching closer to victory. Following Stage 13 of the event, all five MINI ALL4 Racing pairings are now inside the top seven of the overall classification.

Today’s 724km Alashan-Wuhai route continued east across the sandy deserts of inner Mongolia. A steady pace at the start of the Stage was quickly replaced by fast and tight tracks though the dunes.

While one part of the X-raid team currently contests the second half of the Silk way Rally in China, another part travels to Spain for the Baja Aragon, held from 22nd to 24th July around the city of Teruel. The Trebur based team will be represented in the three-day Baja by three MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles and the buggy. For Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) and Michel Périn (FRA), it will the first rally since the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge that was their first rally in the 2016 season. And for the Argentinean Orlando Terranova it even will be the first appearance in the MINI ALL4 Racing since the Dakar. He will contest the Spanish event with the Belgian co-driver Tom Colsoul. The third MINI ALL4 Racing will be raced by Ricardo Porem / Paulo Fiuza (both POR), with Jutta Kleinschmidt in the buggy being accompanied by PhilipBeier (both GER).

50 percent of the fastest cars in the overall standings of the 2016 Silk Way Rally are MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles. With 10 of the 15 stages contested, Yazeed Al-Rajhi (KSA) and Timo Gottschalk (GER) hold third position, followed by Russian pairing Vladimir Vasilyev / Konstantin Zhiltsov. Meanwhile, Harry Hunt (GBR) and Andreas Schulz (GER) continued to work their way up and currently hold fifth place. Behind them, Aidyn Rakhimbayev (KAZ) / Anton Nikolaev (RUS) and Bauyrzhan Issabayev / Vladimir Demyanenko (RUS) follow in sixth and eighth positions respectively.

The first two stages (St 7 and 8) within Chinese territory produced close racing over the weekend and also gave the MINI ALL4 Racing family reason to celebrate on Sunday evening after Stage 8, when the MINI ALL4 Racing crew of Yazeed Al Rajhi (KSA) and Timo Gottschalk (GER) took the stage win.

On the eighth stage, from Bortala to Urumqi, Yazeed Al-Rajhi (KSA) and Timo Gottschalk (GER) were the fastest in the 256.93-kilometres special stage and secured the first stage win for the MINI ALL4 Racing. Russian pairing Vladimir Vasilyev and Konstantin Zhiltsov came fifth, with Harry Hunt (GBR) / Andreas Schulz (GER) and Bauyrzhan Issabayev (KAZ) / Vladimir Demyanenko (RUS) finishing sixth and seventh respectively. Stage 5, on the way from Astana to Balkhash, the teams contesting the Silk Way Rally had to cope with the longest special stage. The MINI ALL4 Racing pairings weren’t ready to get scared by the massive 568.24-kilometre distance and secured the positions two to four, six and 13!

Silk Way Rally 2016: Al Rajhi places MINI ALL4 Racing in second place overall after Day 3

  • Atrocious weather conditions (10-07-2016) forced cancellation of Silk Way Rally Leg 2 Kazan to Ufa. Leg 3 ends with two MINI ALL4 Racing in top five.
Today’s Leg 3 of the Silk Way Rally signalled the start of demanding long distance cross-country rally driving. After the short but spectacular Special Stage of Leg 1, the five MINI ALL4 Racing crews were keen to show what they and their MINI ALL4 Racing were capable of from the start of Leg 2 (10-07-2016).

Unfortunately, the previous days of rain had caused many of the route tracks to flood. With the threat of yet more violent storms forcing the support helicopters to remain grounded, the Silk Way Rally organising team reluctantly had to cancel Leg 2 and the competitors drove orderly to Ufa for today’s start of Leg 3.

Chief MINI Designer Anders Warming quits

MINI's head of Design, Anders Warming, has left the BMW Group after 11 years for another opportunity elsewhere.

First revealed on GTSpirit, the Danish designer had been in charge of MINI design since 2011 after Gert Hildebrand left.

Warming has been responsible for the latest MINI Clubman and the Superleggera concept, as well as the next-generation MINI Countryman.

It is not yet known where he will be going or who will be replacing him or when.

It's a bit quiet this weekend as far as big events go, and there's not much Mini motorsport on either. However there are a couple of things to sink your Mini fangs into, the first being a one-off opportunity to stock up on bits from Minispeed as they hold a closing down sale on Saturday.

On Sunday, Kelsey Publishing's stable of Mini magazines are hosting Miniworld Live at Rockingham. We're not big fans of the magazines, or Rockingham and its soulless atmosphere - and when you have the amazing Brands Hatch Mini Festival next week it'll be better to save your pennies for then - especially as we're offering discounted tickets! Five MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles to contest the Silk Way Rally

Two continents, three countries, 10,735 kilometres, 4,105 of them in special stages… this year’s Silk Way Rally (8th to 24th July, 2016) represents one of the biggest challenges of the season. Five MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles will be involved when the field hits the road in Russia’s capital Moscow for the trip across Kazakhstan to China’s capital Beijing.
