MINI Plant Oxford thief's fake letter sends him to jail

Lee Loveridge
Two men have been found guilty of stealing over 1,000 catalytic convertors from MINI Plant Oxford, according to the Oxford Times.

Lee Loveridge, 37, and Luke Trotman, 30, stole £67,000 worth of catalytic convertors between October 2014 and February 2015 whilst working for contractor Mitie.

At a previous hearing Loveridge's defence handed the court a letter purporting to be from his employer stating that they would still be willing to employ Loveridge despite his conviction. However, this letter proved to be fraudulent and written by Loveridge himself.

Overseeing the court, Recorder Harold Persaud had said the letter had "impressed" and "persuaded" him to hand Loveridge a suspended sentence of 10 months, suspended for 18 months, on the day. But after discovering the letter was a fake he said he had been "misled during the course of mitigation" and handed Loveridge a 14 month custodial sentence instead.

Luke Trotman
Prosecuting Cathy Olliver said: "On a number of occasions they found they [MINI] had ran out of catalytic converters. Stock levels fell to such a level to cause great concern."

Loveridge, with 16 previous convictions, and Trotman, with one for robbery, were identified by CCTV.

Steven Wrelton, spokesman for Mini Plant Oxford said: "We have reviewed our procedures on site as a result of these offences."
