VIDEO: Classic Mini breaks Guinness World Record

On Guinness World Records Day, Alastair Moffatt of Stunt Drive UK has put every day parking efforts to shame by conquering the record for Tightest parallel parking in reverse.
 
First thing this GWR Day morning, multiple-record holder and stunt drive specialist Alastair Moffatt successfully reversed a classic Mini Cooper into a parking space leaving a combined distance of just 34 cm between his car and the vehicles in front and behind.

Foot to the floor in reverse, Alastair performed a dramatic J-turn, then a handbrake turn, to slot into an impossibly tight space and break one of the most competitive records in the stunt driving field: the Tightest parallel parking in reverse.

Upon achieving the record, the stunt pro said: “I am so thrilled that I was able to achieve a Guinness World Records title today – especially on Guinness World Records Day, it doesn’t get much better than that. A lot of planning, dedication and, of course, parking went into today’s successful record attempt.”

An on-site official Guinness World Records adjudicator confirmed that Moffatt bettered the previous record of 35 cm by 1 cm - a record that was set by Ronny Wechselberger aka Ronny C' Rock (Germany) on the set of Guinness World Records - Wir holen den Rekord nach Deutschland (RTL2), at Flugplatz Kindel in Eisenach, Germany, on 18 June 2012.

Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday, who attended the record-breaking event, said: “What Alastair has achieved today encapsulates everything about Guinness World Records Day – Our parallel parking records are always hotly contested and his demonstration of skill, precision and dedication to achieve such a difficult record is really inspirational stuff. I can barely park in an empty field…”

The attempt took place at the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation and the First motor racing circuit, Brooklands, amongst a display of the greatest classic cars and vehicles Britain has ever produced, including an original 1925 London bus borrowed from the London Bus Museum.

Going into the attempt, Moffatt was already the record holder for the Tightest parallel park, having slipped a Fiat 500C into a space only 7.5 cm (2.95 in) bigger than the car itself during the AutoSport International show at the NEC in Birmingham, UK, on 8 January 2015.
