PRODUCT: Flexible towing eyes for motorsport

Flexible wire towing eyes will be strongly recommended for all cars in UK motorsport in 2016. and may become mandatory in 2017.

Sturdy towing eyes are already mandatory in many forms of motorsport; the MSA rules are now being amended to require non-rigid towing eyes, to prevent damage to other cars in a collision or to marshals during recovery.

The MSA banned 'sticking-out' iron tow-eyes several years ago, since when people have been using the soft strap variety, which has a one-ton breaking strain when new. But after a few weeks in the British weather and a few impacts with the tyres and barrier, these can become very weak, often failing when the recovery crews attempt to recover, resulting in recovery crews having to attach to something inappropriate, possibly leading to damage.

For 2017, four towing eyes will be required for each car; they must be fitted in pairs, front and rear.

Fred Henderson - who was a well-known race and rally driver before turning his hand to vehicle recovery - has developed the ideal solution: wire towing eyes, flexible, strong and unaffected by the weather or impact.

Flexible wire towing eyes are already used by competitors in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), were they have been used for three seasons with no failures and no problems; they are now available for all forms of motorsport.

"We are all reminded endlessly that motorsport can be dangerous, but nothing is more frustrating than to see damage done to your competition car while it is being recovered, whether from a ditch beside a special stage or from a gravel trap at circuit trackside" says Henderson.

The Fred Henderson wire towing eye is available for around £16 (excluding VAT & postage).

Henderson will be happy to talk to race series organizers about their specific requirements.

ABOUT WIRE TOWING EYES
Wire Towing Eyes are the complete answer for easy and positive recovery of any type of motorsport vehicle. The Fred Henderson wire towing eye is manufactured from 6mm 7x19 stainless steel wire, crimped with a copper ferrule, thereby avoiding corrosion, which can occur with cheaper products using steel and aluminium. The unit is finished with a bright coloured, plastic-covered tow-loop.

The wire should be securely attached to the subframe or chassis, leaving the 60mm diameter tow-eye protruding from the bumper or grille. A soft tag is attached, in case the loop drops back inside the bumper or grille. This allows the tow-wire to be retrieved easily.

The wire has been tested and has a breaking point in excess of 2.6 tons, which is approximately twice the weight of even a large motorsport vehicle.

MSA Regulations for 2017 recommend four per car (like the BTCC).
