The Historic Racing Drivers'
Club has been commissioned to stage a unique 45-minute, pit-stop,
feature race at the Donington Historic Festival on Saturday 3 May.
The grid will be made up of
specifically-selected historic touring cars which illustrate the
formative years of the BTCC (formerly known as the British Saloon Car
Championship): from the titanic duels between Jack Sears' Austin
Westminster and the svelte Jaguar Mk1 of Tommy Sopwith, the arrival of
the 'fast Fords' in the form of Jeff Uren and his Ford Zephyr, the upset
of the giant-killing Austin A40 of Doc Shepherd, through to the
emergence of the mould-breaking Mini; the glory days of the Jaguar Mk2 -
before the steamrolling arrival of the thunderous 7-litre Ford Galaxie,
followed by the Lotus Ford Cortina's utter domination, finally giving
way to the might of the Ford Mustang and the class-winning capability of
the nimble Ford Anglia.
HRDC's founder and Race
Director, Julius Thurgood is especially upbeat about this unique
celebration of British Touring Cars: "Not only we will endeavour to
illustrate all examples of the popular championship winners from the
early years of the BTCC; the picture would not be complete without all
the supporting class acts: Riley 1.5, MG Magnette, Borgward Isabella,
Austin A35, Sunbeam Rapier, Ford Zodiac, MG 1100, Fiat Abarth, Alfa
Romeo Sprint GT and GTA, BMW 1800, Ford Falcon, and so on. . .
"This unique race will
literally be a dynamic celebration of the emerging years of British
Touring Car history that is sure to thrill any race fan attending this
spectacular historic festival at Donington."
