Weekend Preview: August 20-21

There's not a lot going on this weekend... and that's because everyone will be at the amazing Oulton Park Mini Festival. That's right, aside from some Rallycross and Scottish racing, there are no other Mini events going on so get your kit together and head north to Cheshire, where the sun has been shining long and hot all week.

 If you don't know the score by now, here's what to expect. The Oulton Park Mini Festival is the northern sibling of the Brands Hatch Mini Festival, with just as much going on with plenty of racing, exhibitions, club stands, entertainment and much more. 

 There's also an opportunity for you to get on track with a grid walk and you'll be able to go and chat to the drivers and teams in the paddock whilst they prepare their high octane machinery. 

 Not only is there plenty of entertainment and action, but the actual location of the track couldn't be more picturesque and scenic. Hidden in the Cheshire countryside, even driving to the venue is a treat!

 We'll be there all day, so keep your eyes peels and take a look at the Tar.ox JCW MINI we'll be bringing down - check out the beastly stoppers on it!

The latest Mini 7 Racing Club Newsletter is out now and previewing this weekend's Oulton Park Mini Festival and all the action set to come from both the Mini Se7ens and Mini Miglias.

 As usual there are reports from the previous event at Brands Hatch where there was plenty of action and tumbles with Colin Peacock smashing up his car and a number of others hitting the gravel. 

 As the club celebrates 50 years of Mini racing, its history is documented inside too, with recaps from races throughout the decades, with this issue including some celebrity drivers taking the Minis out for spin.

Where have all the Appendix K Minis gone?  A few years back at Brands Hatch there was a race just for pre-'66 FiA Appendix K Minis as part of the Masters Series. Three years ago there was at least 15 Minis entered at the Silverstone Classic.  This year 5 Cooper S’s in the “Big Engine Touring Car Class (1293cc Big engine!) and 9 in the Under 2 litre Touring Cars (U2TC). I guess the Mini Festival at Brands a couple of weeks earlier was a bit too much for some of the cars and drivers (and bank balance).

Hungarian Baja: Hirvonen wins his first Cross-Country-Rally

In the Hungarian Baja, round six of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup, two MINI ALL4 Racing pairings, Mikko Hirvonen / Michel Périn and Bryce Menzies / Pete Mortensen, outclassed the entire field. While Mikko Hirvonen celebrated his first win as MINI ALL4 Racing driver, the US-American added to the great MINI ALL4 racing result by finishing second, thus also securing his best result in raid rallying. At the same time, the two Dutchmen, Erik van Loon and Wouter Rosegaar, had to cope with a major dose of bad luck and were forced into early retirement.

Former Chief MINI Designer takes up new role

Former Head of MINI design, Anders Warming, who left the company abruptly last month has revealed his new position as the head of Borgward - a German brand being revived.
Borgward Group AG is reinforcing its management team and has become the first German automaker to create a Board of Management position for Design. Effective January 1, 2017, Anders Warming will become the company's new Board of Management Member for Design. "The creation of a separate Board of Management position for Design underscores design's importance for Borgward," said Ulrich Walker, Chairman of the Board of Borgward Group AG, in Stuttgart on Friday. "I'm very delighted that we can fill this position with such an extraordinary and experienced designer as Anders Warming."

The Danish designer Anders Warming, 43, worked for the BMW Group for a total of more than 16 years, including almost all of the last six years as Head of MINI Design in Munich. Under his leadership, the company created the new design of the MINI Cooper Hatch, the MINI Convertible, and the MINI Clubman. Prior to becoming the Head of MINI Design, Anders Warming was Head of BMW Exterior Design and Team Leader Advanced Design at the BMW Group. From 2003 to 2005, Warming was Team Leader, Design Center Europe at the Volkswagen Group. Warming studied design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena from 1992 to 1996.

 Borgward began back in 1919 but due to financial difficulties it closed down in 1961 before being revived last year by the founder's grandson Christian Borgward. Warming will start his new role with the company on January 2017.
