World Record land speed holder Mini returning to break record again

Land Speed Record Holder 1964 Mini Cooper S returning to Bonneville Speed Week in August 2015

Advance viewing of web series premier uncovering the world's fastest Mini's secrets.

BMW MINI onboard as new sponsor for this years record attempt.

Crowdfundng underway to help the team get to Bonneville (and back!).

In 2012 the Project '64 team set a new land speed record for cars under 1000cc and became the world's fastest classic Mini at Bonneville Speed Week on the iconic Bonneville Salt Flats. We set the record at 146.6mph - the previous record was 131mph set by a Geo Metro (Suzuki Swift). The previous record for a Mini was 121mph. In August 2015 we return to Bonneville aiming for 175mph - a ridiculous speed for a car that was always regarded as fast round corners but not in a straight line.

-------------

Speed Week 2015 is rushing up on us so it's about time we had an update. Things have really picked up with progress on the Bonneville Mini Cooper S now that the days are noticeably slipping by. Garry and Guy at Victory R have pulled the Cooper out of the World of Wearable Art and Collectable Cars Museum and back into the workshop for a complete refresh. Most recently Garry has been rebuilding the running gear at the rear of the car.

There's a long list of things to do but we're on target this time. The newly redesigned 970S race engines are coming together. There's still some parts on their way from some of our new sponsors: Two companies in Costa Mesa, California have teamed up to supply us beautifully designed crankshafts, Heritage Garage, and Marine Crankshaft. Somehow we went all the way to the USA to get parts designed and made by an ex-pat Scotsman and a Kiwi.

There's also been more shiny parts coming in from Specialist Components and Mini Spares, both in the UK, which we really appreciate.

As before Nelson and Bryan at Hartley Engines and Motorsport are building and tuning our engines and Larry Mulholland at Swift Automotive in Christchurch has built the gearboxes.

We're also very excited announce that MINI New Zealand have come onboard as sponsors for this year's record attempt. We're very proud to be working with them and are happy knowing we'll be pushing our Mini off the start line with a new MINI thanks to their efforts.

We've also been wanting for a while now to come up with a way to showcase our amazing sponsors and team members while at the same time giving our supporters some better insight into the car, and the team. Today we're starting a series of short films featuring team members and contributors talking about different aspects of The Road to Bonneville.

Mini stars in The Classic Car Show tonight...

TV

The eighth episode of The Classic Car Show airs tonight on Channel 5 at 7pm and this evening’s programme pays homage to the classic Mini, the best-selling British car in history.
Quentin Willson takes a step back in time to when the Mini was first conceived to uncover exactly what it was that made this tiny four-seater into a legendary British icon. Quentin also discovers how a royal PR stunt made it the must-have accessory for so many celebrities during the ‘60s.

Taking on a Mini adventure of her own, Jodie Kidd takes a look at the Mini’s incredible motorsport heritage. Famed for its handling, the original Mini has chalked up a number of motorsport victories since its inception, including winning the Monte Carlo Rally three times. With the legendary Paddy Hopkirk at her side, Jodie discovers first-hand why the Mini is so special.

Looking at another icon of its decade, Alex Riley heads back to the ‘80s - an era of opulence, fast-paced fashion, finance and cars. Alex’s affordable classic ‘pick of the week’ is the BMW E24 635 CSi, once the car of choice for affluent city traders, today the 218bhp straight-six cruiser can be found in the classifieds for less than £5,000. Alex explains why you should buy one now, while you can.

Meanwhile, Chris Routledge heads to a classic car collectors’ cave full of gems to take a look at a coachbuilt Ford Capri convertible. Built by Crayford in the 1970s, the company took the original Ford Capri and replaced the traditional roof with a fold back canvas top. With fewer than forty cars ever built, Chris explains why this is a barn-find dream.
To wrap up our tribute to the classic Mini, Bruno Senna takes a 1965 British Saloon Car-winning Cooper S to our handling track. Tune in at 7pm to see how it fares.

NEW: the MINI Countryman Park Lane

18:30

Bold athletic flair and supreme versatility define the character of the MINI Countryman. As the first MINI with four doors, a large tailgate, five seats and optional all-wheel drive, it took on the role of an irresistible front-line force from the very outset - both in the conquest of additional target groups for the British premium brand and in the area of off-road driving. Its irrepressible forward thrust and flexibility are now expressed even more strikingly in an exclusive edition model. The MINI Countryman Park Lane sees its world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2015. It will be available worldwide in up to four engine variants from July 2015.
