MINI delays new F56 Cooper D models

17:09

The new MINI has only been on sale a matter of weeks but already a problem has surfaced with customers complaining that the diesel-engined models are excessively loud.

According to AutoExpress, one customer was asked to immediately return his brand new car when he complained that the engine noise inside the cabin was louder than expected. He said: "It was delivered on Friday morning and Friday evening they said bring it back. MINI said it was an audio acoustic problem which doesn't seem right. They said they've suspended all orders."

MINI confirmed engineers are inspecting the problem and that some deliveries of the Cooper D models to customers may be delayed whilst they address the issue.

The 3rd-Gen models of the MINI will primarily be using brand new 3-cylinder engines, and it seems the noise issue might be related to the diesel versions of this new unit.

As with any new product there are bound to be little niggles and teething problems that arise, most classic Mini owners will be well aware of the famous overlapping floorpanels issue on the original 1959 Minis that allowed water to ingress into the footwell.

Colin McRae Forest Stages Joins BHRC Calendar

15:00

The Colin McRae Forest Stages have been added to the calendar of this year’s Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship. The event, organised by Coltness Car Club was the reserve event for the series and becomes a points scoring round following the cancellation of Rally North Wales.

Confirming the news, Championship Secretary John Hunt said, “We were disappointed to hear of the cancellation of Rally North Wales particularly given the huge amount of work that had been put in by the organising team. We are confident, however, that the Colin McRae Forest Stages are a worthy substitute. I am sure our Championship contenders will love the Perthshire stages.” John added, “It seems particularly fitting that the event will be a round of our championship given that Jimmy McRae has chosen to tackle each round this year in the Vauxhall Magnum.

The Colin McRae Forest Stages will take place on Saturday October 4th. The next round of the Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship will now be the Pirelli Carlisle RB Foundation Rally on Saturday 3rd May.

Rally North Wales Cancelled

23:20

Wolverhampton & South Staffordshire Car Club Ltd regret to announce they have been forced to cancel next month’s Welshpool-based Rally North Wales (April 5th) due to insufficient entries and the consequential potential loss of more than £10,000.

The event would have been the first of seven rounds in the MSA British Rally Championship and a qualifying round of the MSA Mintex British Historic championship and the MSA Pirelli Welsh Stage Championship.

When the Entry List officially closed at 21.00 hours today (Friday 21st March) less than 80 paid entries had been received.

“We needed 106 entries just to break-even this year. With less than 80 entries the Club was facing a potential loss of in excess of £10k, which we simply cannot afford. Cancelling last year’s rally cost the Club a similar amount and wiped out any contingency funding for this year” said Guy Weaver, Chairman of W&SSCC Ltd. He continued by saying “He wished to put on record the Clubs thanks to Clerk of the Course, Kevin Witton, and his organising team for their hard work over the last year in producing what we believe would have been an excellent event but the Club cannot sustain this level of loss for a second consecutive year. All entry fees received will be returned in full.”

MAY 3: Donington Historic Festival

15:00
The Historic Racing Drivers' Club has been commissioned to stage a unique 45-minute, pit-stop, feature race at the Donington Historic Festival on Saturday 3 May.

The grid will be made up of specifically-selected historic touring cars which illustrate the formative years of the BTCC (formerly known as the British Saloon Car Championship): from the titanic duels between Jack Sears' Austin Westminster and the svelte Jaguar Mk1 of Tommy Sopwith, the arrival of the 'fast Fords' in the form of Jeff Uren and his Ford Zephyr, the upset of the giant-killing Austin A40 of Doc Shepherd, through to the emergence of the mould-breaking Mini; the glory days of the Jaguar Mk2 - before the steamrolling arrival of the thunderous 7-litre Ford Galaxie, followed by the Lotus Ford Cortina's utter domination, finally giving way to the might of the Ford Mustang and the class-winning capability of the nimble Ford Anglia.

HRDC's founder and Race Director, Julius Thurgood is especially upbeat about this unique celebration of British Touring Cars: "Not only we will endeavour to illustrate all examples of the popular championship winners from the early years of the BTCC; the picture would not be complete without all the supporting class acts: Riley 1.5, MG Magnette, Borgward Isabella, Austin A35, Sunbeam Rapier, Ford Zodiac, MG 1100, Fiat Abarth, Alfa Romeo Sprint GT and GTA, BMW 1800, Ford Falcon, and so on. . .

"This unique race will literally be a dynamic celebration of the emerging years of British Touring Car history that is sure to thrill any race fan attending this spectacular historic festival at Donington."

Croft Autodrome celebrates 50 years with Nostalgia Weekend

11:00

Croft Autodrome will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2014, and with a bumper calendar of high-octane outings capped by the prestigious mid-summer Nostalgia Weekend, fans will be kept entertained season-long from lights-out to chequered flag.

The circuit blasted back into action in style last week following the traditional winter lull, as wall-to-wall sunshine greeted a wide variety of racing saloons and single-seaters taking to the track to signal that Croft – together with its new race control and indoor seated dining area – is well-and-truly open for business.

Croft Autodrome hosted its first motor racing event on August 3, 1964, in the guise of the Daily Mirror Trophy Meeting for touring cars, GTs, sportscars, single-seaters and bikes. Exactly half-a-century later, on August 2/3, 2014, the sights, sounds and smells of yesteryear will be recreated when the Nostalgia Weekend roars into the north-east’s premier motor sport venue. Stars and cars from eras gone-by are sure to wow crowds both on and off the track.

Now entering its fifth consecutive year, the winning blend of historic Hillman Imps and legendary Lotus Cortinas, live music, fashion displays, World War Two encampments and air shows makes the Nostalgia Weekend fun for all the family.

One of the prevalent themes during the 2014 edition of the retro-flavoured festival is expected to be touring cars through the ages, in the year that the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship looks set to produce one of the most competitive and compelling campaigns in its long and illustrious history.

The BTCC will also visit Croft on June 28/29, when no fewer than seven tin-top champions will take to the track and race doorhandle-to-doorhandle around Yorkshire’s temple of speed. Always a favourite amongst the championship’s contenders, the track will doubtless set the scene for some spectacular battles and wheel-to-wheel action.

That’s far from all that there is to enjoy at Croft over the coming months, however, with the BARC, BRSCC, North East Motor Cycle Club, Darlington & District Motor Club, Roger Albert Clark Rally and BTRDA Rallycross amongst others all set to pay a visit. The full season calendar can be seen below.

“This is a big year for Croft Autodrome, and to be able to celebrate our 50th birthday on the very same weekend as the first race meeting back in 1964 makes it even more special,” said circuit manager, Mike Cantelo.

“The Nostalgia Weekend is a fitting event to mark this momentous milestone, and will harken back to those early days when Croft Autodrome was still in its motor racing infancy. It will appeal to fans of all ages across the generations, and we hope many of them will similarly attend some of our other high-profile meetings over the course of the campaign. Our spectators have a lot to look forward to in 2014.”

MINI F56: Accessories and customisation options

21:00

The all-new MINI is more powerful, more refined and more comfortable, and also offers more choice than ever for customers seeking to give their car a unique style.
A fresh and exciting range of model-specific products joins the Original MINI Accessories programme, and is available from the car’s launch in spring 2014. It means buyers can fine-tune the design and functionality of their MINI to suit their individual taste.

Striking exterior touches, high-quality detailing for the interior and exclusive light alloy wheels are all available. Each emphasises the distinctive character of the new MINI and the personal style of its driver.

Just as the third generation MINI is new from the ground up, so the range of Original MINI Accessories has been completely redesigned. The much-loved classics are still there – including roof graphics, exterior mirror caps and additional headlamps – but there is also something new and innovative. It’s a design concept for the exterior and interior made up of four MINI Design Lines, called Vivid Green, Speedwell Blue, John Cooper Works Pro and Essential Black.

For the first time, Original MINI Accessories are precisely matched in design and colour. It means the new MINI can be fitted with a whole host of optional extras, each available in up to four design lines. The pioneering approach, ensuring a co-ordinated design to the outside and inside of the car, applies to textile and all-weather floor mats, sun protection elements, door sill cover strips, exterior and interior mirror caps, roof and side graphics, side indicator surrounds, key lanyards, protective covers and luggage compartment items.

Vivid Green: gives accessories a youthful, fresh look with striking dashes of rich green against a black background.
Speedwell Blue: adds a touch of sporty flair and a sense of tradition, thanks to a reinterpretation of the red, white and blue of the Union Jack, combined with a warm brown tone.
John Cooper Works Pro: reflects a passion for racing with a vibrant chequered flag in black, red and grey.
Essential Black: an understated and elegant design that’s pared back to a chequered pattern which runs diagonally.

Always a popular choice with customers of previous generation MINIs, were the mirror caps, both internal and external. These are now available for the new MINI in the design lines Vivid Green, Speedwell Blue and John Cooper Works Pro. They are also in Union Jack, Black Jack, Chequered Flag Black/Grey, Chequered Flag Black/White and John Cooper Works Pro Carbon. Two additional finishes are new to the programme, Big Bang and Gold Jack.

The selection of roof graphics is more varied than ever before. They are available in nine variants for the standard roof and six for the optional glass roof. Both roof versions can be enhanced with the motifs Union Jack, Black Jack, Gold Jack, Chequered Flag Grey, Chequered Flag White. Additional options for the standard roof are Speedwell Blue, Vivid Green, John Cooper Works Pro and Chequered Flag Black.

Design accents can be added to the side indicator surrounds. In addition to the Union Jack, Black Jack, Chequered Flag Black/Grey and Chequered Flag Black/White, they are now available in the MINI Design Lines Vivid Green, Speedwell Blue, John Cooper Works Pro.

Side graphics are another buyers’ favourite. Made from high-quality foil, they run from the side indicators to the rear wheel arches. For the new MINI they are available in Vivid Green, Speedwell Blue and John Cooper Works Pro, as well as a new version of the John Cooper Works design in the colours Chilli Red and Jet Black.

Two Original MINI Accessories are offered exclusively in the design line Essential Black, and their function is to protect the luggage compartment from getting dirty. Both the floor mat and tray are a perfect fit, made from an anti-slip and waterproof material with straps for easy removal. The luggage compartment floor mat has a textile strip surround, while the tray includes partitions made of brushed aluminium.
Other personalisation options include sun protection elements for the rear window and rear side windows, door sill cover strips backlit with LEDs, additional main beam headlamps and a synthetic fabric car cover. Each is available in up to four MINI Design Lines.

The Original MINI Accessories programme also features a selection of newly-developed light alloy wheels. For the first time, it includes 18-inch forged aluminium rims in cross-spoke design. There are also 17-inch light alloy wheels available in multi-spoke design, which are available in Bright Silver metallic or Liquid Black. For an extra touch of class, the hub caps on all MINI light alloy wheels can be finished in Chilli Red, Bright Orange, Apple Green or Bright Yellow.

More innovative is the MINI key cap, making its debut on this car. It features an integrated NFC (Near Field Communication) chip for non-contact data exchange between the MINI key and the customer’s smartphone. After synchronisation at the press of a button, smartphone functions such as a Bluetooth connection, volume control or app launch can be activated via the key. This means that the MINI driver’s individual settings for features such as MINI Connected Services are detected immediately the driver gets into the car.

All Original MINI Accessories reflect the excellent standards of the BMW Group, in terms of design, quality and safety. Retro-fitting these parts has no impact on the warranty terms as applicable to the vehicle in question. Sales and installation are taken care of by the MINI dealer network, MINI sales subsidiaries and MINI service partners.

2014 BUDGET: Road Tax exemption for 40-year-old classic cars

19:33
The years of campaigning by the classic car industry, clubs and lobbyists has finally paid off, after UK Chancellor of the Exchequer revealed that classic cars over 40 years old on April 1, 2014, will no longer have to pay Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), commonly known as Road Tax.

The move is not some temporary measure either, as George Osbourne announced it would be a 'rolling scheme' meaning any cars that turn 40 next April will also be exempt from the tax, and so on.

Given that VED in the UK is now partially calculated on vehicle emissions, and that classic cars are comparatively pollutonous, the change in the law will also save owners a fair bit of money over the year - our 1991 Mini has VED charge of £140 per annum - money that could be better spent on parts!

All you need to know about the new F56 MINI

20:54
Here is the full Press Release from MINI regarding the launch of the 3rd Generation MINI (F56).

  • Contemporary evolution of classic MINI design, with improved features and higher quality
  • Debut of new ground-breaking three-cylinder engines
  • State-of-the-art connectivity and premium technology, including new driver assistance equipment
  • New interactive central display using LEDs
  • Outstanding MINI handling makes it even more fun to drive
  • Built in Oxford, available at MINI dealers nationwide 15 March 2014
  • MINI One Hatch priced from £13,750 OTR
Even though the new MINI Hatch is instantly recognisable – something which comes from having such a globally identifiable design – the car is completely new from the ground up. Every component has been back to the drawing board in an effort to optimise its function, performance and style.
The result is ‘The New Original’, a MINI which is distinctly familiar but enhanced in every single way. It features significant improvements in technology, engine efficiency and power delivery, driving dynamics, quality and – of course – personalisation. Inside, the new MINI Hatch is quieter than the outgoing model, with improvements to acoustic refinement inside the cabin.
The new MINI Hatch is more spacious than before, safer, finished to an even higher standard and provides the driver with a more dynamic and performance-oriented experience behind the wheel.
Inside the cabin, new technology ensures that the new MINI is the most connected car in its segment. A new central LED display, the first of its kind, provides the driver with visual feedback whilst operating the car and creates a premium ambience. It reflects a maturity and confidence in the brand’s design and engineering, a car which pays tribute to its unique British heritage yet stands ready to lead MINI into the second half of this decade and beyond.

New MINI in detail

Exterior: unmistakable design, contemporary style
The body of the new MINI is 3,821mm long (MINI Cooper S is 3,850mm), 1,727mm wide and 1,414mm tall. This makes it 98mm longer, 44mm wider and 7mm taller than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been extended by 28mm, while the track width has been enlarged at the front by 42mm and at the rear by 34mm.
Behind the changes, the new car has classic MINI proportions and an instantly familiar design that’s packed with character. Traditional cues such as the hexagonal contour of the radiator grille, circular headlights, ‘side scuttle’ indicator surrounds, upright rear light clusters and black lower body edging have all been subtly reinterpreted.
In profile, the tapering line of the glasshouse creates a dynamic wedge shape. Below, a visual link between the front and rear wheel arches comes via a striking lower sill line and upper character line, which feature downward curves at both ends.
The new MINI is the first car in its segment to offer the option of LED headlamps for both dipped and main beam. They are surrounded by an LED daylight driving ring, the lower section of which reaches down to the white turn indicators. The rear light clusters also feature an all-LED design.
Five new exterior colours have been added to MINI’s already extensive palette, while the roof and exterior mirror caps can be finished in a contrasting colour, black or white, as a no-cost option. Roof rails are available for the new MINI for the first time. Other ways of adding a touch of individual style include black or white bonnet stripes.

Interior: hallmark MINI style, new display and operating concept
The new MINI’s exterior dimensions mean greater room for up to four occupants and their luggage, including enhanced shoulder space and larger footwells. The front seats have been given a wider adjustment range, and the base has been lengthened by 23mm for additional comfort and support. A choice of fabric or leather finishes, or a combination of both, is available. It’s also easier than ever for rear seat passengers to gain access to the back.
The rear bench seat back can be split 60:40. For even greater practicality, the optional storage package includes a luggage compartment floor which can be locked into place at various points and the rear seat backrest features tilt-angle adjustment. Boot volume has been increased by more than 30 per cent to 211 litres. Numerous cup holders and storage facilities make life easier for occupants.
With an instantly recognisable design, state-of-the-art functionality and premium colour/material combinations, there’s no mistaking the dashboard of the new MINI Hatch. The horizontal structure of the cockpit, linked to circular and elliptical details, remains, but has evolved to take on a more sophisticated form.
At the heart of the design changes is a new display and operating concept, illustrated by the instrument cluster on the steering column. Speed, revs and fuel level are displayed on vertically arranged circular dials. The speedometer scale includes a colour panel for messages and vehicle status displays.
The iconic central instrument now has extended functionality. Depending on the optional equipment chosen, it can serve as a four-line TFT display as standard or optional colour screen up to 8.8-inches showing vehicle functions, infotainment, navigation and MINI Connected services. Selection of these functions is performed via a choice of two new controllers, the MINI Controller or MINI Touch Controller, fitted in the centre console which come in conjunction with MINI Visual Boost Radio or the MINI Navigation System.
Groundbreaking LED lighting around the new MINI Hatch’s central instrument provides visual feedback to the current situation on the road and to specific operational steps, according to the driver’s preference. For example, when Park Distance Control is activated, the remaining distance to obstacles is shown by means of a ring of light which is illuminated in green, yellow or red - supplementing the graphic display. A change in the car’s driving mode confirmed by LED units which light up in green, orange or red. Route guidance information provided by the MINI Navigation System is also visually supported by the illuminated ring: the closer the car gets to the turn-off point, the smaller the lit-up area around the edge of the central instrument.
Keyless-go is now standard across the MINI Hatch range. The start/stop toggle switch located in the middle of the centre console features a heartbeat illumination which pulses before the engine is started. A number of switches have been relocated for improved usability, including those for the electric windows, which are now integrated into the door trim.

Powertrains: three all-new engines, three all-new gearboxes
The new MINI Hatch features a range of three entirely new engines, each featuring MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology to increase driving fun and improve environmental efficiency. The trio all offer improved performance figures, with maximum power across all three variants produced lower down the rev range, while fuel consumption and emission levels have been reduced by as much as 27 per cent when compared to their predecessor models. All meet the stringent EU6 exhaust emissions criteria.
The new MINI Cooper Hatch has a three-cylinder petrol engine with a peak output of 136hp. The new MINI Cooper S Hatch is powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine which develops 192hp. The new MINI Cooper D Hatch comes with a three-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 116hp. For fuel efficiency this latter model is the undoubted star performer, with average combined economy of 80.7mpg using the EU test cycle.

A six-speed manual transmission comes as standard featuring rev matching on downward shifts. A six-speed automatic transmission is available as an option on each engine. The automatic transmission sees efficiency improvements against the outgoing model, making a significant contribution towards reducing CO2 levels. For example, the outgoing MINI Cooper D Automatic Hatch produces 135g/km CO2 with the new MINI Cooper D Hatch producing 98g/km CO2, a reduction of 38% against the outgoing model.
Both transmission systems are newly developed. The auto features an engine start/stop function for the first time, preventing unnecessary fuel consumption. When used in conjunction with the MINI Navigation System, it’s able to take account of the selected route profile and control gear shifts. Based on navigation data, the appropriate drive position is selected to match the road ahead, preventing unnecessary upshifts.
Now on the options list is a third transmission, a six-speed sports automatic transmission which enables even shorter shift times, features rev matching on downward shifts and can be operated in manual mode using shift paddles behind the steering wheel.
MINIMALISM environmental technologies continue to feature on all MINI vehicles, and the new Hatch is no exception. Designed to reduce fuel consumption, the suite of standard features includes a shift-point display function on manual cars and optimised preheating process on the diesel. Brake energy recuperation and need-oriented control of the fuel pump, coolant pump and other ancillary units feature on all models.

Optimised suspension: less weight, even more fun to drive
The suspension in the new MINI has been extensively revised. A new single-joint spring strut axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear intensify the MINI Hatch’s unique handling properties.
In order to reduce weight and increase component rigidity, the new front axle is fitted with aluminium swivel bearings as well as axle supports and wishbones made of high-strength steel. This supports the agile turn-in response and precise steering of the new MINI. At the rear, the share of high-strength steel used in the axle has been increased.
All improvements are aimed at intensifying the MINI’s handling responses, better known as that famous ‘go-kart’ feeling. Engineers have worked hard on the suspension to improve the acoustic refinement in the MINI’s cabin and eliminate vibrations from the road surface after chassis testing on UK roads.
Also new to the car is Variable Damper Control. Available as an option, it presents drivers with the choice of two distinct set-ups, a more comfort-oriented response or a more sporty and firm one.
The new MINI Cooper Hatch and MINI Cooper D Hatch ride on 15-inch forged light alloy wheels, which have low weight and excellent aerodynamics. The MINI Cooper S Hatch is fitted with 16-inch light alloy wheels as standard. Rims up to 18 inches in diameter are available as optional extras.
Highly resilient bearing structures, deformation zones and an extremely stable passenger cell are all part of the new MINI’s design. Together these provide an excellent basis for keeping impact energy away from passengers and ensuring maximum occupant protection. The standard safety fittings include front and side airbags as well as curtain airbags for the front and rear seats, automatic passenger airbag deactivation and front and rear ISOFIX. The aim is to achieve maximum scores on all the relevant crash tests worldwide.

High-end features for comfort, functionality and individual style
The increased standard specification on the new MINI includes electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, air-conditioning, door sill cover strips with a model-specific inscription, front fog lamps, onboard computer, MINI Radio including aux-in, USB interface and Bluetooth. These can be supplemented with a range of desirable options for comfort, convenience, additional functionality and customisation. They include two-zone automatic air-conditioning, heated front seats, panoramic glass roof, visibility package including windscreen heating, rain sensor and automatic light control, a Harman Kardon hi-fi speaker system and a sports leather steering wheel. Other options include Park Distance Control, electrically heated and folding exterior mirrors, and both interior and exterior mirrors with automatic anti-dazzle function.

MINI Connected: more connected than ever
MINI Connected or MINI Connected XL is also available in conjunction with the MINI Visual Boost Radio and the MINI Navigation System. It offers extensive integration of smartphones inside the car, enabling the use of internet-based services in the areas of infotainment, communication and driver experience. This functionality is provided via a diverse and continually expanding number of apps which are downloaded to a connected smartphone.
MINI Connected XL includes the Journey Mate function for networked navigation, with Real Time Traffic Information.
In future, both the MINI Connected app and MINI Connected-ready apps supplied by third-party providers will be available not just for the Apple iPhone but also for smartphones using the Android operating system.
MINI Connected remains the access point for vehicle-related functions such as Mission Control, Dynamic Music, Driving Excitement and the MINIMALISM Analyser. MINI Connected is also the way into online-based services such as web radio, the use of social networks including Facebook, Twitter, foursquare and Glympse, receiving RSS news feeds and entertainment features such as AUPEO!, Stitcher, Deezer, Audible, Napster and TuneIn.
Another innovative feature is the Intelligent Emergency Calling (E-call). This new option is a first in the premium compact car segment, and is used to establish phone connections required for the use of optional functions such as Emergency Call. In the event of an accident, this system automatically detects vehicle location, accident severity and contacts a call centre to initiate fast and effective assistance.
The SIM card also enables use of MINI Teleservices. This class-leading telematics feature provides automatic transmission of service-related vehicle data to a MINI Service Partner of the customer's choice.

Driver assistance systems: new MINI, new technology
The new MINI Hatch signals the introduction of a range of technologies which are making their brand debut. They include the optional MINI Head-Up-Display which shows information relevant to the driver on an extendable monitor in the upper section of the dashboard. Also new is the Driving Assistant option, a camera-based cruise control and distance control function which automatically maintains a predetermined distance from the vehicle ahead. It includes a collision and pedestrian warning system with initial brake function, road sign detection and high-beam assistant. A rear view camera and parking assistant are also available for the new MINI for the first time.
In addition to ABS anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution (EBD), cornering brake control (CBC) with brake assistant, the driving stability control system (DSC) in the new MINI includes a drive-off assistant, brake dry function, fading brake support and dynamic traction control (DTC). This latter system permits controlled slip at the drive wheels so as to facilitate driving off on loose sand or deep snow.
The new MINI Cooper S features a performance control system, which counteracts any tendency to understeer prior to reaching the threshold level, supporting an agile yet neutral driving response in corners.

MINI Driving Modes: a basis for fuel-efficient motoring
Another new innovation and brand debut is MINI Driving Modes, an optional extra on the new MINI Hatch. Using a rotary switch at the base of the gearstick or selector lever, drivers can swap from the default MID mode to either SPORT or GREEN. The three choices offer a set-up which is either performance-oriented, comfortable and well-balanced or geared towards fuel efficiency. The latter includes decoupling of the drivetrain – better known as ‘coasting’ – when the driver removes their foot from the accelerator pedal. MINI Driving Modes also influences the ambient lighting, shift characteristics of the automatic transmission and the Variable Damper Control if the option is selected.

Personalisation: more of what people love
MINI pioneered the concept of automotive personalisation and that spirit of individuality continues with the new Hatch. The list of interior and exterior customisable components, and the options for them, is extensive. Most popular are expected to be a John Cooper Works rear spoiler, various decorative trims for roof, exterior mirrors, bonnet, seat upholstery, interior surfaces and new Colour Lines.

Pricing
The new MINI Cooper Hatch starts at £15,300 OTR. This represents only a 2.61 per cent increase compared against the outgoing model and customers benefit from a host of additional equipment including adjustable exterior mirrors, air-conditioning, front fog lamps, onboard computer, MINI Radio including aux-in, USB interface and Bluetooth all as standard. The MINI Cooper D Hatch’s OTR price of £16,450 represents only a 1.64 per cent increase verses the outgoing model. Completing the range is the MINI Cooper S Hatch starting from £18,650.

New MINI Hatch: Built in Oxford
The new MINI Hatch is built in Britain at Plant Oxford, a state-of-the-art facility which celebrated 100 years of car production in Oxford during 2013, which remains at the heart of the MINI manufacturing network. Plant Oxford received the lion’s share of a £750 million investment in the MINI Production Triangle which also includes Plant Swindon and Plant Hams Hall. Besides a new state-of-the-art bodyshop, Plant Oxford also benefitted from upgrades to its quality validation processes, to its paintshop and from a series of initiatives reducing the operation’s carbon footprint and improving its waste management processes.
The New Hatch launches at MINI dealers across the UK on Saturday 15th March 2014.

Music line-up announced for Silverstone Classic festival

11:00

Two great names from rock and pop history – Canned Heat and Bonnie Tyler – will headline the live music bill at this year’s award-winning Silverstone Classic (25-27 July).

Formed nearly 50 years ago in California, Canned Heat remains one of the world’s most famous boogie rock groups – and a timeless band that never fails to deliver.

The blues based American outfit was one of the stars of the legendary Woodstock festival at the height of the hippie era and songs such as ‘Going up the Country’ and ‘On the Road Again’ remain rock classics to this day. Though founder members Bob Hite and Alan Wilson have passed away, two of the surviving members from the Woodstock era – bassist Larry Taylor and drummer Fito de la Parra – are still rolling back the years and continuing to wow audiences around the globe.

Friday evening’s bill topping performance at the Silverstone Classic will be the band’s only UK appearance in 2014 and comes as the finale to a busy European tour that includes dates in Switzerland, Germany and Belgium. This is a rare UK appearance for Canned Heat – their last official tour was more than a decade ago in 2001.

Then on Saturday the live music stage sees Bonnie Tyler topping the line-up. Often referred to as the ‘International First Lady of Rock’, Tyler shot to prominence in the late Seventies and early Eighties with a string of hit singles including: ‘Lost in France’; ‘More than a Lover’; ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ and ‘Holding Out for a Hero’. Since then her distinctive, husky voice has featured on numerous albums and singles and last year her song ‘Believe in Me’ was the UK’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Silverstone Classic festival goers will also be treated to a host of other familiar favourites from three top tribute bands. Aerosmith Big Ones and the Ultimate Eagles will be performing with Canned Heat on Friday while Bonnie Tyler will be supported by Signed Sealed and Delivered: A Motown Revue. Performing soul classics by idols such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops and Michael Jackson, their Motown music set will amplify the special 50-year celebrations for the iconic Ford Mustang. Rising stars Mo Evans and the Jim Stapley band are also on Saturday’s live music bill.

“It’s shaping up to be another huge ‘Rocking and Racing’ summer for the Silverstone Classic,” admitted Nick Wigley, event director. “There will be more bumper grids of historic racing cars and we’ve already had a record number of car clubs signing up for displays. But while the cars will always be the stars, live music has always been a key part of the family entertainment on offer, notably for those staying at Silverstone for the entire festival weekend. We’ve had some great bands performing in recent years and I’m thrilled that we can now add the names of Canned Heat and Bonnie Tyler to those of Adam Ant, Mike & the Mechanics, Santana, Suzi Quatro, the Hollies, 10cc and the Yardbirds.”

All tickets to the Silverstone Classic give free access to the live music concerts on both Friday and Saturday evenings as well as racing paddocks and trackside grandstands. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Those booking before the end of March can take full advantage of special ‘Early Bird’ prices with adult entrance starting from just £33 (including booking fees). Considerable savings are also on offer for those spending the full weekend at Silverstone and special packages for car clubs and their members are available. Full details can be found on the official www.silverstoneclassic.com website.

R.A.C. Rally: 2014 Severn Valley Stages is launched

12:30
The wraps have come off plans for the 2014 Severn Valley Stages (Saturday 31 May), which will be a competitor-focused event offering 44 stage miles for £475.

The team at Midland Manor Motor Club have worked to refresh the event for 2014 and will build on the success of last season’s 40th anniversary. The rally has been re-branded and new members have joined the hugely experienced core team of rally organisers.

The route will take in special stages in Cefn, Crychan and Halfway forests, offering crews the chance to compete over some of the finest gravel roads in British rallying. With 44 stage miles and 93 road miles, the compact event will start at 8.30am and have the first car back at the finish before 3pm.

The Royal Welsh Showground at Builth Wells will once more provide an unrivalled venue for rally HQ, scrutineering, attended overnight parking, camping facilities, start, finish, service and refuel area as well as the setting for the end-of-rally awards’ ceremony. Scrutineering and documentation will be held primarily on Friday afternoon but, by prior arrangement, there will be the chance to complete scrutineering and signing-on during Saturday morning, so avoiding overnight accommodation costs.

The refresh for 2014 includes the inclusion of the event as round four of the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship, while the organisers are delighted to retain the Brian Dennis Motorsport Welsh Historic Rally Championship and the Pirelli MSA Welsh Stage Rally Championship.

“Our new branding and fresh approach, together with a high-profile new championship, are aimed at revitalising this firm favourite in the rally calendar,” said Secretary of the Meeting Steven Tibbetts. “Over the years we have endeavoured to offer some of the best rally stages that Wales has to offer. We aim to provide a value for money rally whilst maintaining the quality of organisation that crews have come to expect from this event. At a cost of £10.80 a stage mile and with payment by instalments, we believe we have achieved just that.”

The Regulations and Entry Form can be downloaded from www.severnvalleystages.co.uk from 1 March 2014.

Revised TV plan confirmed for R.A.C. Rally Championship

09:00

The new television package for the 2014 West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship has been confirmed following the sad loss of David Winstanley last month.

Olly Dickinson will take over the project and will lead the programme editing and production as well as presenting and on-event interviews. He will be supported by renowned motor sport commentator David Addison, who will deliver the narrative to the programmes.

“We can never replace David Winstanley, who has a special place in the affections of all rally fans,” said championship manager Colin Heppenstall. “However, we are very pleased with the new arrangement. I’m sure that Olly is going to be a great addition to the R.A.C. team and he brings a real passion for historic rallying. I’m also very pleased that we have been able to give a hard-working young guy this opportunity.”

“I’m delighted to have the chance to come on-board with this rapidly growing championship and I look forward to producing quality TV coverage,” said Dickinson.

Addison, meanwhile, is best known as the lead voice for live ITV4 coverage of the British Touring Car Championship and has extensive experience of commentating and narrating right across the sport and up to the highest level. “This will be a new challenge for me,” he said. “I’ve always been a real fan of rallying and historics in particular, and I’ve heard a great deal about the strength and popularity of the R.A.C. Championship.”

The new team will start its coverage with the action from round two, the Mid Wales Stages, which is scheduled to air on Motors TV on Friday 28 March. Details of the coverage of round one, the Red Kite Stages, will be announced shortly.

90-minute programme
Each championship round will be covered in detail in a 90-minute programme on Motors TV with multiple repeats and there will also be an end-of-season review programme to give the championship over 50 hours of TV coverage. Initial broadcasts will run in prime-time slots, typically three weeks after the rally.

Alongside the TV coverage, the entire R.A.C. Rally Championship will again be available on iRally and will build on more than one million views achieved in 2013 for the championship and the Roger Albert Clark Rally. The free iRally App is available for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices and offers an incredibly popular rally video channel.

Support for coverage of the 2014 WWRS R.A.C. Rally Championship comes from TV partners Amigos, JD Garage Equipment, Jordan Road Surfacing, Lloyd-Thomas Opticians, Lynwood Classic Engines, Rally and Competition Equipment, rallyprep.co.uk, Robinson Road Planing, Skipton Ford, Sherwood Engines and Swift Leisure.

The West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship is the only championship that runs historics first on the road on all events.

Buying a used car: Know your legal rights

21:52
Don't get done over by a dodgy dealer.

Most used car buyers may think that if their new purchase develops a problem, there’s nothing they can do, but that’s not the case. Vehicle information expert, HPI®, the provider of HPI Check® urges used car buyers to establish their legal rights before they part with their hard-earned cash. With 1 in 3 cars checked by HPI®  found to have a hidden history, it pays to get a vehicle history check, but many consumers still take the risk and could end up out of pocket.

“Whether you buy through a dealer or a private seller, consumers need to do their homework before handing any money over,” says Shane Teskey, www.hpicheck.com Senior Consumer Services Manager. “The private market often has some of the most tempting offers, but it offers very little legal protection for buyers. We advise ‘Caveat emptor’, the legal term for buyer beware.

“It’s easy to be taken in by a charming seller with an answer for everything, but if it turns out to be a pack of lies, you can take them to the small claims court. However, the legal bill could be more than the value of the car.”

Forewarned Is Forearmed
When buying privately, head to www.hpicheck.com to conduct a vehicle check, providing one of the best forms of protection. The HPI Check®includes a mileage check against the National Mileage Register as standard, now with over 160 million mileage readings. HPI®  also confirms whether a vehicle is currently recorded as stolen with the police, has outstanding finance against it or has been written-off, making it the best way for consumers to protect themselves from fraudsters looking to make a fast profit. In addition, the HPI Check®offers a £30,000 Guarantee* in the event of the information it provides being inaccurate, offering added financial peace of mind to used car buyers.

Sale of Goods Act
Most car buyers think that just because they have bought privately that they are not entitled to a refund but that’s a myth.  Used car buyers can go back to the vendor under the Sale of Goods Act if the car is not as described or a satisfactory quality and fit for purpose and ask for a refund or for the car to be repaired.

“Make sure you keep a copy of the description of the car noted in the advert and then talk to seller about the discrepancies – if you still want the car rather than a full refund you could negotiate and ask the seller to pay for what is needed to meet the description in the ad – that way you keep the car and get what you thought you paid for.”

Buy From a Reputable Dealer
If buying from a dealership, ask to see the history and mileage checks they should have conducted, as advised by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). Check that they are part of an organisation such as the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) or that they have signed up to the Motor Codes scheme (www.motorcodes.co.uk), which demands a strict code of practice. If you buy from a reputable dealer, your rights are comparable with buying from any other retail outlet.

Shane Teskey concludes, “With a little bit of research, consumers can arm themselves with the facts and reduce the risks of falling foul of fraudulent sellers. We encourage all used car buyers to understand their rights when buying a car from dealers and private sellers. Before you complete the deal, head to www.hpicheck.com for a full vehicle check that could reveal whether that car is a bargain or a banger with something to hide.”

MINI: No bigger MINIs in pipeline

10:20
MINI chief designer, Anders Warming, has reassured Mini fans that there are no longer any plans to introduce a seven-seater MINI MPV, and that the MINI Countryman will remain the largest vehicle in the MINI stable.

Speaking to Auto Express he said: "We won’t build anything bigger than the Countryman, not at this moment. You should be able to park a Mini in a city, so a Countryman or this new Clubman is as big as it should be."

The comment will be of great relief to many who think the brand has already made the new cars too big and are moving away from the ethos of the original Mini.

The news also comes amid speculation that the range of MINIs available will be trimmed down in future as the 3rd Generation of MINIs get redesigned and come into production.
